Palladio designed the façade of his church on a monumental scale
so that it would be visible across St Mark's Basin. It is one
of the landmarks of Venice. The interior has a wonderful feeling
of space and harmony owing to Palladio's careful use of proportions.
There are two fine Tintorettos flanking the high altar, with
some good Renaissance sculpture, and a very realistic Adoration
of the Shepherds by Jacopo Bassano at the foot of the right
aisle. Pius VII was elected Pope in the adjoining monastery,
now housing
the Cini Foundation. The view from the top of the campanile
is breathtaking.
