Despite Ruskin's hysterical objections, Palladio's churches
are among the architectural glories of Venice. The Redentore
(1577-92) built to commemorate Venice's delivery from yet another
outbreak of the plague, stands on the Giudecca. The feast day
(3rd Sunday in July), when Venetians cross a bridge of boats
to the church, is still one of the great events in the life of
the city. The two superimposed pediments show how cleverly Palladio
adapted classical temple front to a church façade. The interior,
with its fine semi-circular colonnade, provides further evidence
of how deeply Palladio was inspired by the buildings of ancient
Rome.
