Longhena's massive 17th century palace has finally been reopened
after a 20 year restoration programme and at a cost of over 23
billion lira. It originally cost the Priuli-Bon family the vast
sum of 100,00 ducats to buy their way into the closed ranks of
the Venetian nobility.
The palace now contains a museum of 18th
century Venetian art. The entire collection has been restored
with two of the most significant interventions being the restoration
of the frescoes by Pietro Visconti and Giambattista Crosa in
the ballroom, and the fresco cycle by Tiepolo, originally from
the Villa di Zianigo. This was the age when Venice was the playground
of Europe. The exuberant frescoed ceilings of Giambattista Tiepolo,
the wonderful paintings of Carnival by his son, the fantastic
carvings of Brustolon and the elegant lacquered furniture all
evoke the delectable swansong of the Venetian Republic when Grand
Tourists flocked to the city to enjoy its myriad delights.
