All
the great names in Venetian painting are housed in
the old Scuola della Carita (a Scuola was a guild or confraternity)
next to the Accademia bridge. Highlights are a number
of exquisite Bellinis of the Madonna and Child, Giorgione's
enigmatic and atmospheric Tempesta, his most famous
painting,
Veronese's sumptuous Feast in the House of Levi, and
a number of dramatic Tintorettos of the Life of St
Mark. Carpaccio's cycle of the Life of St Ursula provides another
example of his unrivalled gift in depicting a complex
narrative sequence. Next door, paintings from the Scuola
di San Giovanni Evangelista give a vivid view of late
15th century Venice. On the way out don't miss Titian's
delightful Presentation of the Virgin.
