Ponte delle Torri, Spoleto

An immensely impressive sight, spanning the ravine. The architect Gattapone probably made use of foundations of a Roman aqueduct. Crossing the bridge on foot is not for those who suffer from vertigo. The fortress above was also built by Gattapone for Cardinal Albornoz after his conquest of Umbria for the papacy in the mid 14th century. It is still used as a prison and, for many years, housed the attempted assassin of the present Pope.

The church of San Pietro is in the distance.
