Another
gem of medieval town planning with the two Romanesque churches
of San Silvestro and San Michele Arcangelo facing one another,
flanked by the Palazzo dei Consoli, with an astonishing
19th century theatre tucked away inside. Unfortunately,
both churches were badly damaged by the earthquake in 1997
and will not be re-opened for several years. Bevagna was
another Roman settlement, and there is a fine 2nd century
Roman mosaic of sea creatures in Via Porta Guelfa (ask
for directions at the Tourist Office in Piazza Silvestri).
The town was also the setting for St Francis' famous Sermon
to the Birds, one of the most appealing episodes in his
life.
