Walks

Welcome to the Walks pages - here we have listed our suggestions for sight-seeing and interesting places to visit during your trip to Umbria.

WALK ONE: PERUGIA

Required Time: A full day

Perugia

Collegio del Cambio

Galleria Nazionale dell' Umbria

Fontana Maggiore

Sala dei Notari

Duomo

San Severo

Oratorio di San Bernardino

San Pietro

Umbria's ancient capital, dating back to the time of the Etruscans. Lots of evocative medieval streets. Plenty of Renaissance painting, mostly by Perugino, whose star pupil was Raphael.

WALK TWO: ASSISI

Required Time: A whole day

Assisi - Walk Two - Umbria

San Francesco

Assisi

Piazza del Comune

Duomo (façade)

San Damiano

Eremo degli Carceri

The charismatic St Francis still pulls in pilgrims and tourists by the thousand. The Basilica of San Francesco houses the best ensemble of 13th-14th century painting in Italy. Very well restored following the earthquake of 1997.

WALK THREE: SPOLETO

Required Time: Half a day

Spoleto

Ponte delle Torri

Roman Theatre - Spoleto

Duomo

Roman Theatre

San Pietro (façade)

Strong candidate to be the most beautiful Umbrian hilltown. Breathtaking first view of the Duomo. From the 6th to the 13th century the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto was a major power in central Italy.

WALK FOUR: TODI

Required Time: Half a day

Todi

Piazza del Popolo

Duomo

San Fortunato

Santa Maria della Consolazione

Magnificently situated on its hilltop. Legend has it that an eagle stole a tablecloth from a local dining al fresco and dropped it here; he could not have chosen a better spot. The views from the town centre over unspoilt Umbrian countryside are spectacular.

WALK FIVE: SPELLO, MONTEFALCO, BEVAGNA

Required Time: Whole day

Spello

Porta Venere

Santa Maria  Maggiore

Montefalco

Bevagna - Piazza Silvestri

Each little town possesses its own character. Spello is probably the prettiest, Bevagna has a delightful town square, while Montefalco's superb position has earned it the reputation as 'the Balcony of Umbria. The surrounding countryside encapsulates the charm of rural Italy. Feels like a real discovery.

WALK SIX: ORVIETO

Required Time: One hour

Orvieto

Duomo

Stands on imposing clifftop and has been an important defensive site since the Etruscans founded it in the 7th century BC. During the Middle Ages the town, like so much of central Italy, was riven by feuds between Guelphs (pro Pope) and Ghibellines (pro Emperor). Many of the oldest buildings are constructed of golden-coloured tufa.
