The Bankers' Guild commissioned Perugino, the most
famous painter in Umbria, to fresco the walls in 1498. His antique
heroes and Old Testament prophets show a typical humanist theme
of classical and Christian virtues. The reveal a painter at the
height of his powers, ably assisted by the young Raphael. Perugino's
self-portrait on the left wall is painted with disarming frankness.
The carved woodwork is also of the highest quality.
