This wide, open plateau stands almost at
the peak of the Apennines. It gives a feeling of enormous
space, with just a few distant signs of humanity. In
late spring it is a sea of colour with one of the most
spectacular displays of wild flowers in Italy. Fittingly,
the Piano Grande was chosen by Zeffirelli as the setting
for his film Brother Sun, Sister Moon, an account of
the life of St Francis.
