One of a number of pilgrimage churches in central Italy celebrating
the cult of the Madonna. The architectural masterpiece of Francesco
di Giorgio stands below the town in an olive grove. The church
was built from 1485 to 1513 following the discovery of a miraculous
image of the Virgin by a lime-burner (calcinaio). The interior
possesses a wonderful feeling of space, the decoration restricted
to grey pietra serena offset against the white walls.
