Abbazia di Sant'Antimo, Montalcino

This simple building stands in a beautiful position in a bowl in the hills beyond Montalcino. The abbey, begun in 1118, is pure French Romanesque, deriving from the abbey at Cluny. It was immensely powerful in the 12th century. The plain interior has marvellous acoustics, if you are lucky enough to hear the Augustinian monks singing Gregorian chant.
