San Michele in Foro, Lucca

This tall church stands in the old Roman Forum, where Caesar, Pompey and Crassus held a fateful meeting in 56 BC. The best Romanesque façade in Lucca, it towers above the spectator. The interior is a little disappointing, apart from a brilliantly coloured altarpiece by Filippino Lippi in the right transept. Puccini was a choirboy in this church and his birth-place is just off the piazza.
