San Biagio, Montepulciano

This pilgrimage church stands in splendid isolation below the town of Montepulciano. Antonio da Sangallo the Elder's church was built of handsome white travertine between 1518 and 1545. The Greek cross plan, surmounted by a dome, and the simple severity of the decoration, based on ancient Roman prototypes, is based on Bramante's plan for St Peter's.
