Too much to see along with all the other sites in a single day.
This is where you can make the best overview of Sienese painting.
The 14th century marked the high point of the school. Emerging
from its Byzantine origins, Duccio's jewel-like Madonna dei Francescani
and Simone Martini's Blessed Agostino Novello, with their lyrical
grace, point the way forward. The dramatic expressiveness of
the Lorenzetti brothers, the religious intensity of Giovanni
di Paolo, the sumptuous colours of Bartolo di Fredi and two delightful
little landscapes attributed to Sassetta, all show the brilliance
of the Sienese School. Matteo di Giovanni and Francesco di Giorgio
in the 15th century, and Sodoma in the 16th century, show a closer
integration with mainstream Florentine art.
