Stands at the junction of Siena's three hills. Locals think
its shell-like shape represents the Virgin's mantle. Typical
Italian ingenuity to place the Palazzo Pubblico at the bottom
of the square to gain full dramatic effect. The nine radiating
lines represent the nine magistrates who ran the medieval government.
The Campo has been the focal point of Sienese life since the
14th century. The Palio is run round the square twice a year.
