Situated behind the Palazzo Comunale, which houses the Etruscan
Museum, and opposite the Duomo. The museum possesses a fine collection
of works of the Sienese School, including a Duccio Madonna with
Angels and a Pietro Lorenzetti Crucifixion, and outstanding works
by Signorelli, a native of Cortona, and Fra Angelico. Signorelli's
harrowing Lamentation over the Dead Christ contrasts with Fra
Angelico's works which are all sweetness and light. The Florentine
lived in the monastery of San Domenico for ten years, and his
Madonna of Mercy and Annunciation have all the freshness of the
Tuscan spring.
