Its black and white stripes are one of the city's landmarks.
Giovanni Pisano's façade of 1285-96, encrusted with sculpture,
is in the full-blown Gothic style, imitating that of Orvieto
cathedral.
The unique pavement inside, decorated by all the leading
Sienese artists of the 15th and 16th centuries, has now been
covered over. Instead, you can admire Nicola Pisano's early
Gothic pulpit, carved with scenes from the Life of Christ, and
the immensely
decorative frescoes by Pinturicchio in the Libreria Piccolomini.
Painted in 1502-9 with scenes from the Life of Pope Pius II
(a Piccolomini), they are one of the most charming fresco cycles
in Tuscany.
