This abbey is one of the most impressive 13th century monastic
foundations in Italy. It was built between 1212 and 1288. The
Cistercians built their churches far from civilisation, and the
magnificent ruins still stand in beautiful lonely countryside.
The size of the abbey testifies to its former position as one
of the most powerful places in Tuscany, with close links with
Siena. Very evocative small round Romanesque church above the
ruins, with San Galgano's sword plunged into the stone, symbolising
his rejection of his military career. Truly Arthurian in feel.
