Pisa
by Night - unfortunately, the main sights in
Pisa are overrun with tourists during the summer months.
If you want to enjoy this old university town at leisure,
come in the late afternoon and stay for dinner. A visit
to the Campo
dei Miracoli on a warm night can be one of
the most evocative experiences in Italy. Easy to imagine
Galileo conducting his experiments from the top of
the Leaning Tower. During the early Middle Ages, Pisa
was the dominant power in the Mediterranean. With the
wealth the Pisans accumulated from their maritime empire,
they created a highly original style of architecture. |

Santa
Maria della Spina - A Gothic jewel
on the banks of the Arno |

Villa
Medicea, Poggio a Caiano - The best survival of a
series of Medici villas surrounding Florence. A favourite
of Lorenzo Il Magnifico. Good 16th century frescoes
inside. |
| |
San
Michele, Carmignano - For those
who think Pontormo was one of the most original
painters of the entire Renaissance, this is the
place to visit |
| |
San
Galgano - Romantic, ruined abbey
far from the main tourist sites |
| |
Torri -
Good Romanesque cloister well off the tourist trail |
