Campo dei Miracoli

Deservedly famous for the buildings which best celebrate Pisa's moment of glory. At night the Duomo, Baptistery, Leaning Tower and Campo Santo stand unmolested on their sward of green grass. The Duomo was begun first, in 1063, followed by the Baptistery in 1153, the Leaning Tower in 1173 and the Campo Santo in 1277. The pure white stone gleams in the moonlight. The striped façade of the Duomo, covered in sculpture, interspersed with marble mosaics and glazed terracottas, is characteristic of the new style which spread from Pisa all over Tuscany. If you want to visit the interior of the buildings, and see the famous pulpits by Nicola Pisano (Baptistery) of the 1250s, and by his son Giovanni (Duomo) of 1302-11, as well as the surviving 14th century frescoes of the Triumph of Death in the Campo Santo, come before 7 pm, when the buildings close.

To get into the church on a Sunday morning look virtuous to get past the guards fighting off non-mass goers
