It’s hard to believe that such a delightfully stylish hotel could ever be found in such a discrete and modest location - hidden behind large and imposing stone walls on the edge of a tiny hilltop village of Moncioni in the heart of Tuscany. The setting of Villa Sassolini is unique, situated on the border of the Arno Valley and rolling hills of Chianti – both providing incredible views.
Previously the holiday home of Florentine nobility, the old building has since been skillfully renovated and turned into a small ten bedroom hotel of understated luxury and style, with a modern funky feel to it. The traditional style villa still retains some original features such as beautiful frescoed ceilings in some of the rooms, lime washed wooden floors and old beams throughout, however the creative owner has an amazing eye for detail and has decked out the spacious suites with elegant, contemporary furnishings, softened with the occasional period piece and cool muted colours. The dim yellow lighting enhances a pervading sense of calm, and altogether it is considered a refreshing change from the many over-antiqued Tuscan villas in the area.
The intimate restaurant with a vaulted ceiling and a wine cellar offers a fantastic menu of regional Italian cuisine, and a wonderful alternative to the softly lit dining room is to eat out on the romantic terrace surrounded by overgrown rosemary and lavender bushes, where once can enjoy the amazing panoramic views over the Chianti hills.
All of this combined produces an overwhelmingly relaxing ambiance, and it will be hard to find another hotel in the area as unique in style and personality as Villa Sassolini, as well as offering such a wonderful and personal service.
