The historian Gaspero Righini describes the Villa in his
book “Chianti Classico” as follows:
“Il
Poggiale, one of the oldest and most beautiful villas
in San Casciano, rises up out of its ancient solid walls,
on the top of the Argiano hills, along the Via Empolese.
On the garden side of the house there is an elegant portico
with Tuscan style columns, while all the doors and windows
are decorated with stones of a pure Renaissance nature”.
Until recently a family home (breakfast is still taken
in the nursery) the Villa has wonderfully relaxed atmosphere
for such grand surroundings. The character of each bedroom
is unique. Walls are painted in soft pastel colours and
the
fabrics used for curtains and canopies come from small
Tuscan artisanal workshops, some rooms still have their
original
frescoes. Bathrooms are decorated with hand painted tiles
and our favourite has a free standing roll top bath.
The
public rooms are more elegant: Oriental silks have been
used in the salons and the large hall, the heart of the
house,
with its beautiful hand painted doors, has comfortable
armchairs to collapse in after a hard days sight seeing.
Outside you can relax with a book under the Renaissance
loggia which
has a wonderful view of the ancient rose garden or cool
off in the swimming pool.
Breakfast alone was enough to lure us. Fresh ricotta
cheese, jams, honey and prosciutto supplied by nearby
farms. Apple
cinnamon cake, fruit tart, brioche bread, chocolate
cake and quiches were all home made, some of which from
old
family recipes.
