A favourite with Bellini Travel, this secluded gem of a hotel
continues to draw in the rich and famous. Just a few miles out
of the charming fishing town of Porto Ercole and overlooking
the spectacular coastline of Monte Argentario. The hotel has
its own private beach (albeit concrete) with a James Bond lift
that swoops you down from the cliffs above to the gin clear water
below plus a sea water swimming pool and spa.
The main hotel opened in 1965 with Charlie Chaplin as guest
of honour and for the first ten years was run more like an English
Country Club with the same guests returning year after year
and
the original owner turning away guests he didn't like the look
of. However things have changed and the hotel has recently
been renovated with a new annexe offering a slightly different
style
of room from the old whitewashed, simplicity of the original
rooms. Our favourites were the independent suites in villas
just behind the main hotel hidden between cypress trees and olive
groves. The rooms were vast, with large terraces overlooking
the stunning view and offering more privacy than those in the
main hotel. Bathrooms are stocked with the delicous Bulgari
Green
Tea products, large white robes and slippers and big fluffy towels.
Days are for understated chic, however in the evening most
guests do dress up for dinner in the restaurant. Service was
impeccable
if a little overbearing but the food consisting of local specialities
including spaghetti with sea urchins was delicious and the
wine list is extremely well-done including the obvious super
Tuscans
and vino nobiles but also a good selection of Australian, Chilean
and American wines.
This hotel is still one of the most exclusive hotels in Tuscany
and ideal for those looking for a weekend or week to disappear
and return thoroughly pampered and happy.
Located just over an hours drive from Rome Fiumicino.
