Located just outside the walls of Siena, one of the most dreamily evocative medieval cities in Europe, the majestic Certosa di Maggiano is the perfect option for people looking for a haven of peace and quiet in the heart of Chianti country, whilst also being just a mere 2km from the famous Piazza del Campo.
Originally a 14th century Carthusian monastery, the Certosa was beautifully restored and made into a hotel in 1975. The 17 rooms and suites corresponding to what were seventeen monastic cells, are situated on three floors and offer the style and comfort of an aristocratic villa, with classic prints and bold colours. Each one is individual in style, but share the same refined elegance that is prevalent throughout. Our favourites are those with panoramic views of Siena.
The public rooms are equally impressive: The "Emperor's Hall" bears 18th century Venetian portraits of the twelve ancient Roman Emperors, the 19th century English style library and games room is lined by antique bookcases, and walnut sofas upholstered with fine silks custom made by the Florentine silk producers.
As well as the magnificent 14th century cloister there are extensive grounds of olive groves, vineyards, and well stocked kitchen gardens. The hotel produces all its own olive oil, fruit and vegetables on an old farm belonging to the monastery, from which their Michelin starred restaurant ‘Il Canto’ takes its name. This restaurant is rapidly growing a reputation as one of the best in Tuscany.
