The San Domenico Palace is one of the most beautiful hotels in Sicily. A former 14th century monastery, it rises majestically above the captivating hill town of Taormina which has long captured the imagination of royalty, artists, writers and scientists alike who have never ceased to be enchanted by its sheer beauty and dramatic location, overlooking the Mediterranean and the peak of Mount Etna.
Converted to a hotel in 1896, with its 14th century original structures, the San Domenico qualifies as one of Italy’s oldest and most famous monastery hotels. Many a famous guest has stayed there, from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to Goethe, and all were enchanted by the panoramic views and lush gardens over-flowing with orange blossom, jasmine and roses.
We prefer the old part of the hotel including the delightful cloister and cell-like rooms that overlook the sea and gardens. Rooms have all been individually decorated with simple terracotta floors and filled with local antiques and paintings. However, the bathrooms are in need of updating and if you are looking for space and a less personal feel, then the rooms in the new annexe are large and comfortable but lack the charm of the original monastery. They also have the added benefit of private terraces where breakfast can be enjoyed overlooking the breathtaking bay of Taormina.
The swimming pool is located in a charming walled garden, and in the summer months with the small bar hidden beneath a colonnade, it is a stunning place to escape from the scorching Sicilian sun. In the cool of the evening, guests can wander through the cobbled streets of Taormina to the ancient Greek Amphitheatre and have cocktails on the terrace of the Grand Hotel Timeo. The Timeo has a more dramatic view of Mount Etna but we prefer the San Domenico for service and comfort. |
