Capofaro Hotel, Salina

Capofaro, Salina

Home of the film “Il Postino”, the verdant island of Salina is considered by many to be the most relaxed of the Aeolian islands. The Capofaro resort is named after the statuesque lighthouse that forms part of the estate amongst fields of vineyards which produce some of the finest wines in the region.

There are only 18 whitewashed rooms located in the seven typical Aeolian cottages that feel far more like Santorini than Italy; all with fabulous views of the sea, all beautifully yet simply decorated and some with terraces shaded with woven bamboo known as ‘cannizi’. The well-stocked bathrooms are covered in lava stone – suitably apt for the nightly fireworks displays of lava exploding from the nearby island of Stromboli.

Service is relaxed and friendly, the resort has the feel of a private club. In the summer months beautiful bronzed Italians from neighbouring islands descend on the lounge type bar for cocktails and dinner in the chic open air restaurant which serves elegant Sicilian cuisine. Highlights included dishes based around capers and ‘nepitilla’, a mint like herb that comes from the island. Wine lovers are in safe hands; the owners are the Tasca D’Almerita family who make some of the finest wines in Sicily not to mention the outstanding Malvasia sweet wine which is made from the vines surrounding the resort.

It is easy to stroll through the grounds, from the large infinity pool to the tennis court and solarium but for those in need of a post-lunch siesta, golf carts can also be provided. The helpful staff will arrange everything from boats, bicycles and scooters to explore the crystal waters, pebbly beaches of this enchanting island. We agree it is not the easiest part of Italy to reach but it is well worth it and in the spring and autumn you will probably have it to yourself.
