The Spanish Steps

Contemporary with the Trevi Fountain (1732), the Spanish Steps are one of the landmarks of Rome. Francesco de Sanctis' brilliant solution to an exceedingly difficult, precipitous site is a bravura piece of town planning.

The piazza below has always been a favourite haunt of foreigners. Keats died in the house on the right of the Steps.

All the smart shops are ranged around the Via Condotti, which leads off the square.
