Contemporary with the Trevi Fountain (1732), the Spanish Steps
are one of the landmarks of Rome. Francesco de Sanctis' brilliant
solution to an exceedingly difficult, precipitous site is a bravura
piece of town planning.
The piazza below has always been a favourite
haunt of foreigners. Keats died in the house on the right of
the Steps.
All the smart shops are ranged around the Via Condotti,
which leads off the square.
