This medieval church dates back to the 4th century and is probably
the first church in the city dedicated to the Virgin. It stands
in a charming piazza in the heart of Trastevere.
The handsome
columns in the nave, as so often, are pillaged from classical
buildings. The 12th and 13th century mosaics in the apse, many
of them by Pietro Cavallini, a contemporary of Giotto, are of
superb quality.
