The way that you suddenly come across the building, sitting
in its tiny piazza, encapsulates the charm of the historic centre
of Rome. The interior is a revelation, with the vast dome giving
a wonderful feeling of lightness and space. The Emperor Hadrian,
who erected the Pantheon between 118 and 128 AD, and did his
utmost to conceal his role as the architect. If you feel inspired
by this masterpiece, in my view the finest of all ancient Roman
monuments, and want to see more works by the greatest builder
in antiquity, make sure you visit Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli before
leaving Rome.
