Walk past the exterior, built by the Emperor Vespasian in 70-76
AD, and experience the awe-inspiring size of the greatest of
all Roman amphitheatres. The building was used as a quarry by
generations of Romans. The interior, the scene of countless bloody
gladiatorial contests, is of lesser interest.
