Apart from the odd invasion of local school children, the extensive
port of ancient Rome is still off the tourist trail. The beautiful
and evocative park, covered in umbrella pines, is certainly worth
visiting. Whole streets of houses and shops from this busy port
on the mouth of the Tiber still survive, many of them with mosaic
floors describing the activities of their inhabitants (fishermen,
sailors, merchants etc). If you strongly dislike crowds, this
is a better site to visit than Pompeii.
