The Inghilterra is an old Bellini favourite, ideal for those looking for a cosy and intimate getaway amidst elegant surroundings. Originally the 17th century home of the noble Torlonia family, it was then turned into an exclusive hotel that today remains quietly opulent with its traditional rooms filled with antique furniture, faded mirrors and period paintings, evoking an overall atmosphere of refined glamour.
Despite being spacious with high ceilings and windows, the rooms on the lower floors don’t tend to get an enormous amount of light due to the narrow streets and tall buildings. Therefore we recommend that you go for one of the rooms on the upper floors which get the most light, some of which have lovely peaceful terraces covered with flowering vines and overlook the pedestrianized Via Borgognona.
The corner suite on the sixth floor is the ultimate romantic choice, with steps leading up to the bedroom and panoramic views looking out over the rooftops of Rome. The penthouse suite on the same floor has a huge and beautiful terrace, also with superb views, and is often used for exclusive cocktail parties. Marble bathrooms are relatively understated and sometimes on the small side, but offer optimum comfort.
The downstairs public areas are a constant hub of activity and the place to be, with an intimate and typically English bar, and the classically modern Café Romano with its comfortable seating, gentle lighting, and large doors opening up onto one of Rome’s most fashionable shopping streets. Outside seating in such a glam setting provides the perfect place for an early evening aperitivo.
Best of all is the hotel’s super-central location – seconds away from Via Condotti and just a short walk from the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo. This is dangerous for shopaholics but ideal for culture vultures wanting to wander around Rome’s historical centre.
