No other hotel in Rome could possibly rival such a prestigious location; perched at the top of the Spanish steps, looking out over the Eternal City, and minutes away from the shops in Via Condotti and the tranquillity of the Villa Borghese. The Hassler has been with the Wirth family since the 19th century and may be the reason why this small ‘grand dame’ hotel is often likened to a ‘home away from home’. The Belle-Epoque elegance and style along with impeccable service has been hugely appreciated by various illustrious personalities over the years, from the British Royal Family to Hollywood greats.
Rooms are all of a decent size and classically decorated, however it’s the suites that really make this hotel stick out from the other five star deluxe hotels in Rome. The Penthouse Suite on the 7th floor impressed us the most with its huge terrace and breathtaking views – ideal for sunbathing or a sunset cocktail (with fifty of your closest friends!). The opulent Villa Medici suite on the same floor also has its own private terrace that can be reached via a small spiral staircase leading to the eighth floor, and the recently added three-bedroom Hassler Suite was once the studio of Dwight Eisenhower.
If you’re not lucky enough to be ensconced in the Penthouse Suite, then head up to the roof-top restaurant on the sixth floor for the same birds eye view of the city – it really is spectacular and takes in the Spanish Steps, St. Peter's Dome, the Pantheon, the Coliseum, the wedding-cake monument of Victor Emmanuel, and many magnificent Roman Palazzos and Churches.
For those looking for serious romance, then the Hassler can arrange for you to be met at the airport in a vintage Rolls Royce, champagne in your bedroom, followed by a twilight horse-drawn carriage ride around the city. This would have gained the approval of both Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn who both honeymooned in Rome. Need we say more?
