A family weekend in Rome will please young and old alike, finds
Tim Moore in the Observer.
Sign up for Olivia Ercoli's guided tour
of Rome's classical monuments. Within minutes, she'll have the
children's eyes out on stalks with her "beguilingly horrid
stories" about the city's past. She'll point out the melted
stones in the paving, testament to the vanquished Goths, and the
dice and marble game-boards etched into the law-court steps.
A
particular favourite with the children is the soothsayer's statue:
an open-mouthed stone gargoyle set into a wall. The legend goes
that if you stick your hand in and tell a lie, the statue's teeth
will clamp shut on your fingers.
Bellini Travel has guided tours with Olivia Ercoli for about £100.
