Get away from it all - and from everybody
...But, even in early May, travelling to places as popular as Venice nowadays requires careful preparation. I decided to take lessons in Venetian-style rowing, which took me away from the racing speedboats on the Grand Canal and gave me an idyllic view of the lagoon instead. With the help of a bespoke travel company called Bellini Travel, I made sure I never went near St Mark's Square, dining instead at family-run restaurants in Cannaregio and visiting the quietest of gardens in monasteries...
