Relais San Maurizio, Piedmont

Relais San Maurizio is the most luxurious hotel in the relatively unknown region of Piedmont. After a winding drive through stunning scenery, you arrive at the summit of Santo Stefano Belba where hidden amidst tall cypress trees and surrounding by vineyards stands the hotel in all its glory.

Formerly a 17th century Franciscan monastery, the property underwent a major restoration in 2002. There are now thirty one bedrooms which are located throughout the grounds, our favourites are the stable suites which are slightly larger than the monks cells which not surprisingly are charming albeit cosy. The bedrooms have all been individually decorated, some include working fire places, frescoed walls and wooden beamed ceilings, whilst all benefit from large bathrooms and delicious Etro products.

Breakfast is served in the arched, frescoed dining room, whilst the restaurant is located in the vast cavernous cellars of the hotel. Most of the public spaces look out through French windows onto perfectly manicured grounds and the stunning park surrounded by ancient oak and olive trees. The 17th century chapel is a central part of the hotel and has been restored as beautifully as the rest of the monastery.

In keeping with the region, food is one of the main reasons for visiting the San Maurizio. The two Michelin-starred, family-run "Da Guido" attracts local families and businessmen as well as gourmands from around the world. Traditional dishes and ingredients including the region’s celebrated white truffle, when in season, are taken to new levels, while basics such as the home made agnolotti del plin, delicate ravioli filled with a mixture of veal, rabbit pork and vegetables, glazed with a subtle honey and hazelnut dressing are just as outstanding.

The sommelier Piero has an encyclopedic knowledge of regional wines to guide you through the impressive and extensive wine list. The cellar is stocked with thousands of bottles, separated into three wine lists: one assigned to Piedmont, one to France, and the other to wines from the rest of the world.

Under the dry stone vaults, guests can relax at the recently opened vinothérapie spa (the first spa to use wine therapy outside Bordeaux where it originates). The spa’s signature treatments include a barrel bath, red vine bath and crushed cabernet exfoliation. In addition to the spa’s indoor pool, there is also a magnificent designer outdoor pool boasting a panoramic view overlooking the striking Piemontese countryside.

One of the joys of the San Maurizio is that it can be enjoyed throughout the year, from truffle hunting in the autumn to relaxing by the pool in the summer, this enchanting hotel is helping put Piemonte on the map.
