San Lorenzo Maggiore

Another Neapolitan palimpsest: a gaunt Gothic church with interesting tombs, and a Baroque cloister with remarkably well-preserved Roman foundations (it is on the site of the Forum). San Lorenzo has very strong Florentine literary connections: it was in the church that Boccaccio fell in love with Maria, immortalised as Fiammetta; 8 years later Petrarch experienced a terrible storm in the cloister.
