The
heart of old Naples, laid out on the Roman grid plan.
The most interesting streets are Via Biagio dei Librai
and Via Gregorio Armeno, filled with preseppi (Christmas
cribs - a Neapolitan speciality, a panoply of figures
and animals made of wax, wood, clay and porcelain).Grand

WALK TWO - Archaeological & Capodimonte
Museums |
|
Required Time: A complete day, or, preferably, 2 mornings. |
|
Capodimonte
Museum |
|
|
Naples
possesses the two outstanding museums in southern Italy.
The Old Master paintings in Capodimonte and the antiquities
from Pompeii and Herculaneum in the Museo Nazionale are
of world class importance. 'The Pornographic Exhibition'
is a grave disappointment considering the 'creative'
reputation the locals enjoyed in antiquity. |
| |
|
WALK THREE - Pompeii |
|
Required Time: A complete day |
|
Pompeii | |
|
An
enormous site, still being excavated. Wonderful public
buildings: temples, baths, theatre and amphitheatre,
but even better private houses with superb frescoes and
mosaics. Don't miss the evocative Villa dei Misteri at
the north-west corner of the site, with its fascinating
frescoes of a Dionysiac ceremony. |
| |
|
WALK FOUR - Herculaneum and Oplontis |
|
Required Time: A short day |
|
Herculaneum |
|
|
Oplontis |
|
Herculaneum Marvellously
preserved individual houses with their original decoration
which changed the history of European taste. Anyone who
has admired the Getty Museum in Malibu, California should
visit its original prototype: the Villa dei Papiri.
Oplontis If you are in a rush, this is the place
to come to capture an enthralling vignette of life
in antiquity. How many Neapolitans in the last 2,000
years have enjoyed a similarly splendid lifestyle?
No wonder it is supposed to have been the home of
an empress: Nero's wife Poppaea Sabina. |
