A real Neapolitan palimpsest. Behind the neo-Gothic facade
lie Greek and Roman foundations,an early Christian baptistery
with mosaics, a Gothic interior, a fine Renaissance crypt and
the Baroque Chapel of San Gennaro, where the blood of St Janarius,
the patron saint of Naples, liquefies twice a year. The ceremony
originated in fulfillment of a vow against the plague of 1526-29
and on this depends the well being of the city. If you doubt
the truth of this, stay away; a French Grand Tourist who expressed
his misgivings in the 18th century was torn apart by the crowd.
