The frescoes by Ghirlandaio in the Sassetti Chapel of the Life
of St Francis give a vivid pictorial record of life in late Quattrocento
Florence. The artist's contemporaries crowd in to witness St
Francis' miracles, including a number of young Medici princes
who emerge from a trapdoor into Piazza della Signoria. The altarpiece
of the Adoration of the Shepherds is one of Ghirlandaio's best
works.
