The Capponi Chapel just inside the door on the right was frescoed
by the solitary, tormented genius Jacopo Pontormo in 1525-28.
His Lamentation, with its brilliant blues, pinks and greens,
the anguished expression of the participants and the lack of
background, possesses a strange, emotional intensity. It is a
masterpiece of the new, Mannerist style reacting against the
classical harmony of the High Renaissance.
