Off the Beaten Track

A chance to escape from the hordes who are increasingly beating a path to the city of flowers.  Seeing the Perugino in Santa Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi is like a visit to a little shrine buried deep in the Tuscan countryside.  The walk down from San Miniato gives a similar impression of how Florence must once have been, with the city leading straight into the surrounding landscape. The Villa Gamberaia is one of the most beautiful formal gardens in Tuscany.

San Miniato al Monte - The green and white marble façade of this lovely Romanesque church is very characteristic of Tuscany.

Villa Gamberaia - The American writer Edith Wharton described it in 1900 as 'probably the most perfect example even in Italy of great effect on a small scale.

Santa Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi - the Crucifixion and Saints by Perugino feels like a real discovery.
