In our opinion the Helvetia and Bristol is undoubtedly the finest old-fashioned hotel in Florence. An unassuming entrance off via Tornabuoni (the best shopping street in Florence) leads the way into a sophisticated town-house that has long been a favourite with artists and royalty alike.
Our favourite rooms are the green and red junior suites. The Green Suite has emerald green damask covered walls, beds and chairs with a beautiful Renaissance painting above the bed. There is a very small balcony and a good-sized marble bathroom. The Red Suite is even more glorious, overlooking the traffic-free streets (this part of Florence has recently banned cars making it blissfully quiet), a portrait of the Madonna and Child overlooks the large antique bed softly lit by Murano chandeliers. The Helvetia and Bristol is the ideal choice for people looking for peace and tranquillity but who want to stay in the bustling centre of Florence.
Breakfast is taken under the Victorian glass roof of the light and airy winter garden which is also a delightful place for afternoon tea. The hotel’s excellent restaurant, Hostaria Bibendum, produces refined Tuscan dishes served either in the cosy dining room or outside on the charming terrace running along the quiet Via dei Pescioni surrounded by fabulous Florentine palaces.
The staff are incredibly helpful and service is impeccable. Boasting possibly the best location in Florence’s centro storico, you are within a short walk of the cities finest gems including the Duomo, Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio.
