Opened
in January 2003 the Continentale is like a modern burst of sunshine
in a city immersed in the Renaissance. Its contempory style reflects
the fact that it is part if the Ferragamo hotel empire and it
feels as if it was designed by someone with a sense of humour.
From the neon-white lift complete with white leather sofa to
the hotel's state of the art home-theatre and Relaxation Zone
everything is ultra modern and you expect the staff to be in
outfits from a sci-fi movie.
Rooms in the tower have good views of the Ponte
Vecchio below and the roof garden, called "The Sky Lounge" has
a 180 degree view of the city's rooftops and gleaming domes and
spires. Room 304 at the top is our favourite with a double sized
bath on the upper mezzanine floor with views overlooking the
Duomo and the Arno along with a four poster bed below. Bathrooms
could possibly be too modern for some tastes; the sinks have
no plug holes making it impossible to shave and the products
provided are too small to be of much use.
Fresh flowers fill
the hotel, from the white lillies in the bedroom to the charming
miniature vases of pink, red and blue anenomes lining the stairs
to the lobby. This is a fabulous little design hotel which is
welcome arrival on the Florence hotel scene.
