The most spectacular of the towns on the Amalfi coast, a jewel
in the crown of the Duchy of Amalfi. The town is set on a hilltop
1150 feet high, looking down towards the sea. The views from
the Villa Rufolo, an inspiration to Wagner, and especially the
Villa Cimbrone, are breath-taking. The best of several noteworthy
churches is the Duomo, with its 12th century bronze doors, a
rich 13th century raised pulpit and ambo opposite, with barley
sugar columns patterned with mosaics. The blood of the local
San Pantaleone, kept in the Duomo, liquefies in the same way
as that of San Gennaro in Naples (see Naples Duomo). DIRECTIONS: Up in the
hills just above Amalfi
