The elegant Santa Caterina ranks highly among the elite group of hotels that dot the spectacular coastline between Positano and Amalfi. This is mainly due to its spectacular cliff top location just a few minutes drive from the picturesque town of Amalfi.
The entrance to the hotel is just off the coast road high above the Gulf of Salerno, however both bedrooms and public spaces continue to cascade down the cliff edges in a series of natural bougainvillea covered terraces. To reach the sea, guests can either follow the scenic path that winds through citrus groves and lush tropical gardens, or alternatively take the James Bond glass elevator set into the cliff side, which whisks you straight down to the Beach Club. Here they will find a gorgeous saltwater pool and sunbathing platform, along with a gym, spa, and an excellent, informal open air restaurant with a wood-fired pizza oven. On such a packed stretch of coastline, the luxury of a private beach with access to the gin clear waters of the Mediterranean is worth a stay in itself.
The hotel is still owned by the Gambardella family who originally opened the hotel in the 1880’s and as a result it has retained a sense of familiarity and charm that so many of the so called luxury hotels on this coastline lack. The 70 bedrooms nearly all share the same staggering view of the coastline and most of them also come with private balconies or terraces. Rooms are simple yet elegant with a mixture of family antiques, colourful Vietri tiled floors and white washed walls making each one individual. Our favourite suite is the unique but cheesily named ‘Chalet Giulietta e Romeo’, an idyllic cottage perched on the edge of the cliff amidst the lemon and orange groves – a haven for honeymooners or those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the main hotel.
Service is outstanding; the same loyal staff have been there for years and make everyone feel as special as the numerous celebrities who visit each year. Try and book a table for dinner on the candlelit terrace; the food is fabulous and attracts many diners from outside, the ultimate complement for a hotel restaurant.
