Hotel Caruso, Ravello

We love the Caruso! Even on a cold autumn day the newest arrival on the Amalfi Coast could not fail to impress. Perching proudly on the highest point of Ravello, this hotel is just as luxurious as her fellow Orient Express hotels, the Cipriani and Villa San Michele. Not surprising considering the £17 million renovation that took six years to complete.

On arrival in the idyllic cliff top village of Ravello, one winds up cobbled streets past stucco fronted cottages that grow ever narrower until you reach the unassuming entrance guarded by stone lions. As soon as a member of the excellent team opens the door to greet you, you can not fail to be blown away by the spectacular view that stretches out beyond you.

Previously an 11th century palace, the building has been lovingly restored to provide 54 bedrooms all of a good size and most sharing the same breathtaking views. Our favourite rooms include the superior doubles which incorporate the original architectural details including Norman arches and a vast fireplace and some 18th century frescoes. Bathrooms are well stocked and the hotel proudly boasts cashmere blankets in every room and small details such as a broad range of TV channels which so many five star hotels lack.

The public spaces are just as comfortable - a cosy wood paneled bar adjoins the elegant restaurant which is as delicious if not better than the two star Michelin restaurant in the next door hotel. There are plenty of terraces and a glorious pergola filled with twisting oleanders and wisteria that leads you up to the infinity pool - so spectacular that you could spend an entire day here without ever venturing back to the hotel.
